My dearest, darling Vicki has made news this week. Appearing at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, before a forum of historians gathered to discuss Sen. Kennedy's memoir, 'True Compass' at the museum in Boston yesterday where she also signed copied of his book. She is looking rather wonderful if I may say so myself. More pictures are included behind the cut.

Vicki Kennedy: Ted wanted to tell story ‘as only he could’
By Marie Szaniszlo
Edward M. Kennedy didn’t live to see his memoir “True Compass” in print - it arrived at his Cape Cod home Aug. 25, the day the late senator died.

I got my book today. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. Has a cute photo of Ted and Vicki in it I'll have to scan some day. Apparently the author has written several books about various Kennedy members and has interviews quite a few, including Ted.

"Good Ted: a devoted father to his own sons and guardian to his brothers' thirteen children; an able legislator who has been described by colleagues as the best senator of his generation.

Bed Ted: the world's oldest teenager. As his political star ascended, he was exposed as a relentless womanizer and drinker with no regard for public opinion.

Good Ted, Bad Ted puts this paradoxical Kennedy n perspective and answers the question: How can the two Teds coexist in the same individual?"

It talks about some of the bad stuff in his life, but the author doesn't seem at all biased to either side (from the bits I read). Like in one of the Chappaquiddick chapters, it talks about how someone was talking to Ted on the porch or wherever and Ted looked out at the different views and looked towards Chappaquiddick Island and had tears in his eyes and said he'd never forget it, so he was obviously hurt and upset about the incident. Some woman went up to him and asked how he felt about it and he said he lives with it every day.

Stuff about how the guy that shot Reagan had planned on shooting Ted but while he was waiting in Ted's office reception room for three hours with a gun in his pocket, he gave up and left cos Ted was late.

Stuff about why he REALLY wasn't nominated for prez and how it wasn't because of Chappaquiddick.

How he was drunk at the White House with other people after Jack was buried. I thought that would be a bad story but the author says it was a wake and they sang Irish songs and stuff so it was done in a fitting way.

Stuff about how Vicki was 10 and Ted was 31 when they first met (she was stuffing envelopes for Jack). Ted called her dad to ask if he could marry her. Joan was shocked to find out cos she and him still occasionally had dinner and his office always put her calls straight through to him. At their wedding, Maura O'Connell sang their favourite song, "You'll Never Know." They'd heard it on a CD months before and held hands while it was sung. Aside from the daffodils painting he gave her, their cake was a foot-high with spun-sugar daffodils and everyone got a bouquet of daffodils cos he didn't want anyone to miss the point of daffodils meaning a new beginning (being the first flowers of Spring). He and her kids had an Olympics competition doing handstands in the water and they gave him a 6.5, lol! She said his fave casserole was eggplant with chopped meat, onion, pine nuts and tomato(e) sauce.

And other stuff I haven't yet read. Seems like an interesting book, though. Doesn't focus on one or the other side.

Anyone read it?
