True Compass: Ch. 2 (discussion)
Discussion for chapter 2. Reply with what stood out the most, or what you found most interesting.

The part about his dad telling him not to listen in on conversations that don't involve him. What great advice! I need to try that. I pictured myself getting a stupid reply on IMDb.com and knowing my name was in it, but opting to close the thread before reading any further, knowing it was just from a stupid troll. Then I knew it would nag away at me until I looked. Just knowing it existed and would never go away. I don't have that kind of will-power. I'm envious that he did and happy to know it was way healthier for someone like him to abide by.

"Just a few years ago, well over half a century on, I was visiting the Wyeth family in their home in Brandywine. Jamie Wyeth showed us into the room where his family kept its own model train system. Without warning I was catapulted back across the decades to that third-floor room in Bronxville, and in my memory I could hear Bobby's excited chatter above the sound of his engine and its cars on the track. And we were all startled by a loud voice that shook the Wyeth's room: 'DON'T TOUCH THE TRAINS!' It was me, imitating Bobby." I laughed so hard at this and kept re-reading it just to picture it each time, hahahaha!

Little Teddy walking home from school to show his independence and getting beat with the coat hanger because he had his mom worried when she went to pick him up and he wasn't there. Who hasn't done something that seemed smart at the time only to regret it later?

Joe and Jack getting the chauffeur's son to parachute off the roof!

Meeting Babe Ruth and being tongue-tied.

EDIT: Few more....

His father saying "There'll be no crying in this house" and Ted saying they rarely wept in public. I imagine those words rang loud in his head a ton of times.

Luella graduating from college and saying she guesses Jack would know she got it, since he died before he could attend the ceremony.

Ted and Joey going on their boating trip and getting trapped in the storm, leaving the boat and having to go back to get it.

Great advice. I try to follow it. I usually do, but I think we all get a little weak sometimes. I do like to know what people are saying about me, but then I've gone through life being happily unaware, so I know I can live! :P

HAHA, oh yes, I can see the 'DON'T TOUCH THE TRAINS!' thing in my head! I loved that and reread it many times as well!

I have done way too many things that seemed smart at the time but it did not end so good, haha, I guess we just live and learn!

Gah, this is pissing me off, don't have the book with me and I can't remember everything how I'd like to! I can't believe how much I love the first half of the book though. So much family love, humor, and wisdom!

I had to skim back through mine. I said I wasn't gonna do this. The last book I read, I ended up jotting things down all the way through to add to my one site. It was such a hassle for my OCD. I'll be reading and try and remember page numbers and lines, etc.

I wish there was a photo of Ted with some trains cos that would be a great icon. Surely there's a campaign-style photo with a train in it somewhere. Hm.

You'd really think there would be... hmm.... we'll probably find it once we give up on it! xD
